COMPLEXITY
Doric Temple, it reach apparent simple through real complexity
Simplicity and Complexity is the two topics that nowadays modern architects concerned .Difference people might have different point of view depends on the way that people define or understand about the current building. For me, I like complexity and contradiction in architecture which in terms of the “backside” meaning. A building cannot be done just as it without any consideration, or adaption to the surrounding. If that, the buildings will just a meaningless shelter although the exterior view of it very complex.
During my study in Year 2 Semester 1, we were asked to design a gallery in a new village, Jenjarom based on the emergency period that the villagers been through. Which we need to study and analysis the situation, behaviour of human, culture and history of the village. Throughout the study, it finally came out with my design. The design grid of the project was actually taking the consideration of the flow in the road include the nearby old folks home and the welfare house. And this result in the orientation of the project was going to “twist” a bit to suit the considerations taken. For a Simple Orientation but is containing complex thinking behind it.
For the building itself, the materials used also took consideration. As the culture and historical part of the village, the materials chosen were mostly raw concrete and timber to adapt the local history as the population there were mostly elderly people which started their life here around 30-60 years and they having emergency period . The zoning of spaces also tries to suits the needs of the villagers as the project was “tribute to jenjarom”. For example the café zone is closer to the old folk’s home so that elderly people can enjoy their activities there.
The wall of time to time gallery zone was actually split into some as it actually to allow the ventilation to going on and also to provide a view for the one whom enjoying in the café. To richness meaning rather than clarity the meaning (Robert Venturi), the wall was with a meaning there, is not that just for “Beautiful”.
Besides, although the floor plan looks very simple or maybe very regular, but it’s actually derived from the word “福” (Fu) in Chinese which stands for Hokkien福建 (mostly population at jenjarom were Hokkien) and also the name of jenjarom, Blessed village 幸福村.There is a meaning behind my designing of floor plan.
So I think that my project is towards complexity in terms of the consideration, the real meaning inside. Just like the "Doric Temple, it reach apparent simple through real complexity. A simple building can also have an interior whose functions, spaces, uses, and distributions are complex; an interior rich in interrelations rather than in form, for which is simplicity is above all. "(Reflective text).
In my opinion, the modern architects now are more to complexity and contradiction, which in term of they take considerations process before they actually built of the structure. The structure with reason or thinking behind will be more convince people who visit.
