PUBLIC LECTURE
BY CHARLIE SUTHERLAND
Charlie Sutherland studied Architecture at the Mackintosh School in Glasgow. In 1997 He established Sutherland Hussey Architects with Charlie HusseyC.

He completed a number of award winning small scale projects all over the UK; Barnhouse in Highgate London, Lynher dairy in Cornwall; and An Turas on The Island of Tiree, which was also shortlisted for the Stirling and Mies van der Rohe prizes.

He developed in collaboration many projects overseas on a larger scale such as a major urban regeneration proposal for Sligo and was elected as a fellow to the Royal Scottish Academy for Art and Architecture in 2011 .

He was one of five International participants in ‘Achiprix’ an international student and has also been on the jury for the RIBA Silver and Bronze Medals for Architecture.
The theme of PAM Lecture by Charlie is Definite & Infinite, is a principle that in his architecture life.
“Definite and Infinite in the architecture point of view is between the real and unreal, and of course, we have to imagine a project, before it comes real”, explained by Charlie.
Definite is about the way to design it but it would not be a standard to design and hence Charlie corporate with Infinite which the design merge with the site context, human behavior, history and culture. With Definite and Infinite the meaning and context of a project stand out.
"There is no such the most correct way or the only appropriate way in architecture ,we just need to set up our limits , not only seeing the world which normal people will sees... "
PAM TALK BY CHARLIE SUTHERLAND
Except the Definite and Infinite, Charlie also thinks about building material and how it interacts and reacts to the environment and surrounding. Most of his projects have a strong connection with the site itself.
AN TURAS (a ferry terminal shelter in Scotland)
AN TURAS is a “shelter” whilst waiting for the ferry which then becomes a landmark. The structure perfectly merged together and works together with the beauty of nature, considered with the site’s ability, the most Charlie wanted to have is breeze, natural sunlight, quality of island, big sky and horizon.
Hence, 3-part spatial sequence is built which trigger difference senses of the users through a framed view.
-The Glass Box -a complete panorama, looking out along Gott Bay and beyond
- The White Walls -block the strong wind but still allowed user to experienced natural light
- The Bridge-protected from the weather, closed to the sky and the horizon but open to the rock and sand of the beach below.
Lawson Park,BRANTWOOD
The next project is Lawson Park, located in Brantwood.
This is an adaptive reuse project that converts a farm into a residency. The new buildings will provide residential accommodation and research facilities for artists, curators and Grizedale guests, along with small scale conference facilities, warden’s accommodation and site office.

Mr. Sutherland tried not to change much to maintain the historical value of the old hill farm .He did play a contrast between exterior and interior which exterior with raw material which is dull stone as a cladding and interior is changed to be more contemporary which raised up the space quality.

LOVE SHACK, SCOTLAND -LONDON
Love Shack is a proposal to replace existing dwelling. This is a rural retreat with very little, 2 rooms are anchored around a deck that is reached via stepped ramp and which defines a courtyard and Lakeland and other views.

Again, Charlie takes the site context into the design.

The house sits over 3 levels on a steep slope without damaging the site’s protected tree roots. The large panel window allows sunlight to penetrate in and enhance on sight view to the landscape.
The materials selected for the building are in sympathy with the surrounding woodland. The main body of the building is clad in vertical timber boarding. Natural larch panels and glazing are contained within this frame. A sedum roof is used both for environmental stability internally and to reduce the carbon footprint of the building.
As a conclusion, every parts of his project, from the interior to exterior, from our 5 sensory to history and cultural of the site had become parts of the consideration.
From relating the site context, natural context like natural lights and breeze, the projects talking to the landscape, merged with the beauty of nature WHICH then gives special experience to the user. With Definite and Infinite the meaning and context of a project stand out.
