Mr.Mohd Hatta Ismail ,DIA Atelier
Mohd Hatta Ismail is the designer, sculptor and artist from DIA ATELIER. His ideas were in Minimal that he likes contemporary to modern of TIMELESS Space with an electric approach in relation to nature and environment with well orchestrated space. Even the art piece of his effort, are so minimal and simple but it does carry meaning and background inside. The art pieces (painting or sculpture) are inspiring him in art and mostly carrying feelings and mood to the specific surrounding.
Papier Mache Bowl with Different Texture
At the beginning of the talk, he does show us some of his art piece. He did painting on paper Mache bowl. With different colour, small changes in texture and it brings up different feelings. To me the bowl is a sculpture. For him, the bowl is not just as what it is, he interpret the bowl as a pair of hand that carry water and thus a bowl is a space to be! This amazes me that that is true! Why are we often very direct that thinking a bowl is just a utensil for eating? As Hatta defined it as a space, he can start doing his artpice.and he said the process of doing an art piece might change due to the current mood or when he interpret the mood. For one bowl he makes hundreds and he finds the perfection in the perfections.
Art Pieces by Mr.Hattan
Now comes to his painting, minimal painting. “……the drawings were unexplainable……”he said. His drawings are focusing on the primary object that he investigating, and then come in his mood expression and also aesthetic factor for the colour and texture. The painting might create different views and feelings when it reads by different people. In my opinion, maybe the colour he chooses to describe the current mood while he painting and the gradient of the colour might be the feeling that he interpret later.
Meseum Sualtan Abu Bakar
One of the works he showed during the talk was the furnishing in Museum Sultan Abu Bakar.He using the glass as the rack to put all the historical items like keris.The amazing part was the “lembing” which is the spear the hero using in the old times. The “lembing”were then transformed into a sculpture. They all “stands up “and represent the hero were holding. The head of “lembing” is which the yellow ribbon which represent the Sultan at that time. WHY this was amazing to me as we can see the “lembing” were normally covered up by a block and most of the time they were hang onto the wall.I think, Mr.Hatta done a great breakthrough.
SILA LIMA,KUANTAN
“I want a pond in my design, if you want a car porch please seek for others….”this lights up the talk and Hatta is a cheerful designer! This line comes in when he is talking about his work at a retreat,SILA LIMA at Kuantan.He said he do like retreat as awalys.The elements that attracting me was not only the pond, but also the entrance of the retreat which with a full height glass panel wall and it also acts as a opening. The glass element buffers the indoor and outdoor and it allows large amount of natural lights to penetrate into. Besides, he using Slice spatial relationship to the design as we can see at the pond area which to buffer the noise form roadside.Mr.Hatta respect the architect, he did not break the structure of the own building. Besides, he also remains the wall (block) which is the original from the building. ‘….this nothing also, they asked me to remove that but I think it doesn’t cause any so I remain although a little bit crack…”he said.Yes, Mr.Hatta, you do respect the original!
Others Cafe
As the start I wrote, Mr.Hatta likes minimal. During his talk, he emphasize on that ornament in a space is just a cover. For example that he took, the café now are playing with different materials or make ornamentation to the material. But to him this is only the tricks that they played, not really the design. I can understood his point of view as we can see while Mr.Hatta doing his art pieces he do research at the elements unlike the café now just do what they want for aesthetic purposes.
NR NRXT HOUSE
The question is would like to ask during that talk was “Why your designs were mostly with high wall or high gate(NR NEXT HOUSE) is that with all considerations like the SILA LIMA or maybe others? I quiet look forward for it cause I might received an answer with a thinking that out of the box! Just like the space in the bowl.
Thanks,Mr.Hatta for the talk .I was learning from him the pleasure and passion while he doing his works or art pieces.As he said do not care too much,like he loves planting but when he taking too much care on th green,the plant wilt.
